Job advert: Community Development Worker (French speaking)

The Outreach Foundation in Pretoria has an opportunity for a qualified and competent Community Development worker to provide social support services within the service delivery areas through promoting social change, problem solving in human relationships and empowerment through skills training of people to enhance social well-being. This is a 1-year contractual position at its office in Pretoria. The position specifically aims to support migrant and refugee communities from francophone-speaking countries residing in Pretoria.

Minimum Requirements

  • A formal tertiary qualification in Social Work and registered with the South African Council for Social Service Professions, or a qualification in Community Development from a recognised institute.
  • A minimum of 5 years of appropriate experience in Social Work or Community development
  • A Valid code 8 driver`s licence will be advantageous.
  • Fluency in French is a non-negotiable prerequisite.
  • All international qualifications must be accredited through SAQA.
  • Non-South African/foreign applicants must have the required legal documents to work in the country.

Key Performance Areas

  • Render a support service to the care, support, protection and development of vulnerable individuals, groups, families and communities through the relevant programmes (case work, group work, community work and counselling).
  • Attend to matters that result in or stem from social instability in any form.
  • Weekly community outreach and conduct regular home visits.
  • Working with migrants and refugees, assisting in developing tools that could enhance and strengthen the lives of vulnerable communities.
  • Keep up to date with new social work and social welfare developments.
  • Perform all administrative functions required of the job.
  • Conduct group work and counselling sessions in French.
  • Assist with translation in French.

  • The ability and competence to assist, develop, advocate for and empower individuals, families, groups, organisations, and communities to enhance their social functioning and problem-solving capabilities.
  • The ability to promote, restore, maintain, advocate for and enhance the functioning of individuals, families, groups and communities enabling them to accomplish tasks, prevent and alleviate distress and use resources effectively; Proven computer literacy; Report writing skills; Self-Management skills; Good planning and organisational skills; Presentation and facilitation skills; Client orientation and customer focus; Understanding and ability to provide social work services towards protecting people who are vulnerable, at risk and unable to protect themselves. Uphold moral and ethical conduct relating to trust and client confidentiality. Update information on the database for feedback and impact monitoring.

Reporting line

This position reports to the Pretoria office’s line manager for Community Development Services.
