Music Centre
The Music Centre, part of the Outreach Foundation, serves as a safe, constructive, and creative sanctuary for inner-city youth and children participants. Established to provide accessible after-school enrichment and skills development in an urban setting like Hillbrow, the Centre uses Marimba and Piano to build self-confidence, foster discipline, and offer alternative pathways away from social vulnerabilities
Key Achievements:
Piano & Music Theory Programme
- The Piano Programme at the Hillbrow Music Centre combines structured instrumental instruction with formal music theory to drive personal growth and a basic introduction to piano.
- The Piano Programme employs an Accredited Piano teacher, with the music centre being linked to accredited examining bodies such as UNISA. The piano curriculum enables students to progress through formal practical and theoretical grades. Learners consistently achieve accredited milestones, with past students earning accolades such as Gold Certificates at regional Eisteddfods for music advancement.
- Beyond foundational learning, the piano and theory framework is structured to increase mental wellness, coping skills and support.
- Piano tuition anchors the Centre’s broader curriculum, ensuring students develop essential music literacy and reading skills that translate into multi-instrumental proficiency.
Marimba Band Programme
The Marimba Band actively represents the Outreach Foundation across community events, local competitions, and regional festivals. These performances give school participants the opportunity to display their skills and increase participation. This includes collaborative and participatory projects, frequently performing in joint arrangements.
During the 2025 operational period, the Outreach Foundation’s programs in Hillbrow successfully engaged a diverse cohort of participants, ranging from primary to high school learners. They participated in the World Chef Day event hosted at the Outreach Foundation, which brought together high school learners from local Hillbrow schools for hands-on culinary and agricultural workshops.

Homework /Academic Support 2025
Introduction
Outreach Foundation’s Homework /Academic Support activity directly assists learners with daily homework assignments, project tasks, library research, and exam preparation to ensure consistent academic progress.
Activities for 2025 included
Subject tutoring that delivers targeted tutoring in core learning areas, including mathematics, English, and other subjects. This activity is implemented in close coordination with TLT (The Learning Trust) volunteers to maintain a cohesive and structured support environment. Progress is tracked through active monitoring of individual learners, performance over time, and feedback to guide continuous academic improvement. Daily attendance in the programme regularly reaches 30–50 high school learners from local high schools. Participating schools included Centurion and St Endas.
Peer Education & Mentorship support, which includes structured group learning sessions and interactive discussions that encourage collaborative problem-solving among learners. This is also linked to positive role modelling. This also serves as dedicated mentors who embody positive behaviours, resilience, and strong academic ethics for younger participants. Older learners and high school alumni mentor younger students, helping with reading, mathematics, and subject comprehension. This model builds leadership skills and self-esteem in the youth mentors while making academic help relatable and accessible for younger participants. Regular Self-Awareness and life skills sessions facilitate interactive workshops focused on building self-esteem, personal identity, emotional resilience, and goal-setting for participants. Learners are also encouraged to apply concepts from their science and environmental school curriculum in real time, learning about urban agriculture, nutrition, and food security while taking part in practical activities like harvesting crops and cleaning the garden. Educational sessions cover essential life topics, including health awareness, personal development, self-esteem, and career guidance, to prepare learners for future success and careers.
Conclusion:
The homework support programme is designed to bridge the gaps in education and mental well-being faced by vulnerable local youth. The programme combines academic tutoring, life skills, and creative activities in a safe, structured after-school environment. By fostering a supportive space outside the classroom, the initiative ensures that children not only keep up with their school curricula but also build the resilience needed to thrive in challenging circumstances.
