Urban food gardens and eco-education to support healthier and more sustainable habits for urban dwellers. By helping urban dwellers to grow their food through training/ workshops and support, the programme is supporting a healthier, happier and more sustainable way of life for everyone. This position will challenge your coordination, social, gardening and community development skills when you work on bringing their food gardens to schools, that are used for eco-education and to provide vegetables for school meals. In addition, it will enhance marketing through engagement with informal markets within communities (hawkers).

.Job Responsibilities

  • Integrating the urban garden into the training kitchen, informal traders, school education and food system;
  • Facilitate eco-education workshops/classes for participants, including schools, to increase knowledge, interest, and enthusiasm about gardening, fresh food, and nutrition;
  • Facilitate improved systems and suggestions to optimize the produce and use of the urban garden. For example, sales of excess vegetables to parents, teachers, and the community instead of letting them go to waste, new meal suggestions with more vegetables but in line with local customs, and ways to preserve vegetables and herbs for future use (instead of wasting them);
  • Research into eco-education, nutrition, local customs, etc., to contribute to the above-mentioned tasks; and
  • Working in the garden and nursery, assisting with school workshops and sorting and cleaning the workspaces.

  • Freedom to experiment in the office garden and nursery with interesting food plants and various propagation methods;
  • Free participation in our Organic Food Growing courses; and
  • Experience in working with children of differing abilities and from a range of backgrounds.

* Be between the ages of 18 and 34;
* Have never had any formal employment;
* Must have a matric;
* Have an interest in urban agriculture, culinary arts, being outside, and
* Be proactive and an independent worker with an interest in social enterprise
and business development.
* Love getting their hands dirty and working with children and people with
different backgrounds.
* Be a South African Citizen;
* Are not currently in full-time studies and can attend this internship full-time;

* We will also require a completed application form, a certified copy of your ID no
older than 3 months, and a certified copy of your highest qualification.
