With a passion for cooking that ignited in her mother’s kitchen, 19-year-old Elizabeth Ngamiswa from Yeoville embarked on a journey that would test her determination and resilience. The aroma of freshly baked bread and the sound of sizzling vegetables had always fascinated her, and she knew that becoming a chef was her true calling. After graduating from Edenglen High School with a Bachelor’s degree, Elizabeth’s plans were put on hold due to financial constraints. Despite her mother’s tireless efforts to secure sponsorship and save for her education, their personal challenges and financial obligations made it difficult to continue her studies. “It was a difficult time, but my mother’s unwavering support kept me going,” Elizabeth recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her gap year, Elizabeth worked as a chef at Ascot Hotel, where she gained valuable experience but faced inadequate pay and a harrowing experience involving an armed robbery. This prompted her to seek alternative paths. “I realised that I needed to find a way to pursue my passion without compromising my safety and well-being,” she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s when Elizabeth discovered the Outreach Foundation and became interested in what it had to offer her. Encouraged by her mother’s positive experience with the organisation, she enrolled in the assistant chef course. “I was excited to learn new culinary skills and take the first step towards my dream,” Elizabeth recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through the 8-week course, Elizabeth mastered various culinary skills, from baking delicate croissants to making pasta from scratch. She learned about different cuisines, from Italian to Indian, and experimented with new flavours and ingredients. The highlight of her experience was a visit to the Chocolate Academy in Fourways, where she learned from renowned chefs and refined her skills in chocolate making. “It was a sweet experience that I’ll never forget!” she exclaims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outreach Foundation also facilitated Elizabeth’s participation in the youth internship, offering financial support and valuable work experience. Elizabeth also had the opportunity to collaborate with her mother at the Outreach Foundation\u2019s canteen for 6 months, where she showcased her newfound skills and eventually transitioned to administration to broaden her expertise. “I enjoyed working with my mother and learning from her experience,” she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Outreach Foundation equipped me with significant work experience and skills that have enriched my professional journey and enhanced my CV,” Elizabeth says gratefully. “I’m now more confident in my abilities and excited for the future. I hope to open my restaurant one day and create jobs for others in my community. “With her newfound skills and experience, Elizabeth is ready to take the culinary world by storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
