From Eastern Cape to Hillbrow: Qaqamba takes charge of her future

Qaqamba Fumba, a bright and ambitious young woman from the Eastern Cape, South Africa, had always dreamed of making a difference in her community. With a thirst for adventure and a desire for new opportunities, she boldly moved to Johannesburg, where she hoped to turn her dreams into reality.

Growing up, she faced many challenges, but her determination and passion for helping others drove her to seek new experiences.

In May 2022, Qaqamba walked into the Outreach Foundation with a big smile. She was excited to learn new skills and make a fresh start. Her eyes sparkled with hope as she approached the reception desk. She was on a mission to inquire about the computer course.

With a spring in her step and a heart full of hope, she enrolled in the computer course and soon found herself swept up in the organisation’s volunteer programme.

“I was chuffed to bits to be helping others and using the skills I had learnt,” she said, beaming. ‘It was a real confidence booster, and I loved every minute!’

As a volunteer, Qaqamba threw herself into the role, using her newfound computer skills to help clients craft CVs and revamp their existing ones. She was always on hand to lend a helping hand, whether assisting with administrative tasks or simply being a friendly face around the office.

Her dedication and enthusiasm didn’t go unnoticed. Before long, she landed an incredible opportunity to join the Outreach Foundation as a full-time employee. She joined the organisation as a Data Capturer in April 2024. She was overjoyed and grateful.

Qaqamba reflects on the journey that brought her to this point.

“I’m delighted,” she gushes. “From the moment I walked through the door, I knew I was in the right place. The team has been like a second family to me, and I’m so thankful to have found my footing here. It’s a dream come true!”
