An opportunity exists for a french-speaking community development worker

The Outreach Foundation in Pretoria has an opportunity for a qualified and competent Community Development worker. To provide social support services within the service delivery areas through the promotion of social change, problem-solving in human relationships and empowerment through skills training of people to enhance social well-being. An initial 1-year contract.

Minimum Requirements  

  • A formal tertiary qualification in Social Work (Bachelor of Social Work), Community Development or other related relevant qualification.
  • A minimum of 5 years of appropriate experience in Social Work or Community development 
  • A Valid code 8 driver`s license will be beneficial but not essential.
  • Fluency in French is a non-negotiable prerequisite. 
  • Qualifications must be SAQA-approved before applying for the position.
  • Applicants must be legally compliant to live and work in South Africa. 


Key Performance Areas 

  • Render a support service to the care, support, protection and development of vulnerable individuals, groups, families and communities through the relevant programmes (casework, group work, community development and counselling).
  • Attend to matters that result in or stem from social instability in any form.
  • Weekly community outreach and conduct regular home visits. 
  • Working with migrants and refugees, assisting in the development of tools that could enhance and strengthen the lives of vulnerable communities. 
  • Keep up to date with new developments in the social work and social welfare fields.
  • Perform all administrative functions required of the job.
  • Conduct group work and counselling sessions in French. 
  • Assist with translation in French.   
     

Competencies Knowledge of the following: 

Relevant legislation, policy and prescripts (norms and standards); Supervision framework for Social Workers; Knowledge and understanding of human behaviour and social systems, as well as skills to intervene at the points where people interact with their environments in order to promote social well-being; Social Work theory and interventions; Information and Knowledge Management; Protocol and professional ethics; Social dynamics, work values and principles; Developing and empowering others; Skills to challenge structural sources of poverty, inequality, oppression, discrimination and exclusion; The ability and competence to assist, develop, advocate for and empower individuals, families, groups, organisations, communities to enhance their social functioning and their problem-solving capabilities; 

The ability to promote, restore, maintain, advocate for and enhance the functioning of individuals, families, groups and communities, enabling them to accomplish tasks, prevent and alleviate distress and use resources effectively; Proven computer literacy; Report writing skills; Self-Management skills; Good planning and organisational skills; Presentation and facilitation skills; Client orientation and customer focus; Understanding and ability to provide social work services towards protecting people who are vulnerable, at risk and unable to protect themselves. Uphold moral and ethical conduct relating to trust and client confidentiality. Update information on the database for feedback and monitoring of impact.   

Remuneration: Negotiable 

Reporting line: This position reports to the Manager of Community Development Services.
