Who are we?

The Computer Centre started in June 2007 just as a project. It has since undergone an extensive change in both the staff component as well as in the computer hardware department. At present, it accommodates 20 students per class, 6 classes per week.

The Computer Centre offers basic computer skills from beginners to advanced level. Due to the demand for the courses and the fact that space is limited, students have to complete registration forms and go through a screening process. At the end of their tuition period, students write exams and are awarded certificates.

Why a computer centre in Hillbrow?

High unemployment is a national crisis and particularly affects the youth. This is also evident in Hillbrow and the Inner City. In addition, education is very expensive in South Africa. Many young people from poor backgrounds or even average families, cannot afford to further their studies. Consequently, they find themselves roaming the streets after completing matric or dropping out of school due to financial reasons. Basic computer skills training is one of the many requirements that a job seeker needs to make an entry in the job market.

The Computer Centre focuses on the technological side of creativity and trains learners in practical and essential computer skills.

The introduction of basic computer skills training has significantly impacted in the Hillbrow community. Not only have these courses help boost learners’ confidence and build their self-esteem, but it has also ensured a skills base that prospective employers may find appealing. Many of our trainees have found employment and are earning a decent living.

The Basic computer skills offered includes:

  • Introduction to computing (Windows 8)
  • Microsoft Office Word
  • Microsoft Office Excel
  • Microsoft Office PowerPoint
  • Internet and e-mailing

The centre extended its scope to include Creative Design classes. The Design class teaches recognised software and content management systems such as:

  • Basic design fundamentals
  • Adobe Photoshop Cs6
  • XAMPP (local hosting)
  • Artisteer
  • Filezilla
  • Joomla (content management system)
  • Community Cyber Cafe

Welcome to our new volunteers

The Outreach Foundation is happy to welcome our new volunteers Ben Storjohann and Tim Stoklossa to our team. Ben will be joining our computer team and Tim will be joining our counselling team. A message from Tim

My name is Tim Stoklossa and I am from Hannover, Germany. I graduated
High School in June and in August I came to South Africa to work at the
Outreach Foundation and to discover the country and the culture.
In Germany I sang in a choir and played guitar. Also I worked in a youth
group in my church.
In my few days here I got to know a lot of people. They all
were very obliging and were glad to meet me. I am very happy to be here
and I hope to gather many new experiences here.

A message from Ben

My name is Ben Storjohann and I am from Frankfurt, Germany. I just graduated High School and I am now taking a gap year. I’m really grateful to be able to work at the Lutheran Outreach Foundation. The amount of courses and opportunities to grow, that are offered here at the Foundation truly amaze me. I’m loving the country, the culture and the people so far and can’t wait to get to know the area and my colleagues even further. Thank you for being so welcoming and I hope we can create some awesome memories in the next year together.
