"...the thought that after I completed my matric and I had nothing to do, I was hopeless but you brought light into my life & I was fortunate enough to get to learn how to use a computer which at the end opened so many doors for me..." - (Anna Simelane)

Welcome to Hillbrow Computer Centre

The Computer Centre started in June 2007 as a project of Outreach Foundation and has since undergone extensive change in both the staff component and also in the computer hardware department. At the present moment it accommodates 20 students per class, 6 classes per week.

Why a computer centre in Hillbrow?

High unemployment is a national crisis and particularly affects the youth. This is also evident in Hillbrow and the Inner City. In addition, education is very expensive in South Africa. Many young people from poor backgrounds or even average families cannot afford to further their studies. Consequently, they find themselves roaming the streets after completing matric, or dropping out of school due to financial reasons. Basic computer skills training is one of the many requirements that a job seeker needs to make an entry in the job market.

The Computer Centre focuses on the technological side of creativity and trains learners in practical and essential computer skills.

The introduction of basic computer skills training has significantly impacted in the Hillbrow community. Not only did this help boost learners' confidence and build their self-esteem, but it also ensures a skills base that prospective employers may find appealing. Many of our trainees have found employment and are earning a decent living.

The Basic computer skills offered includes:

  • Introduction to computing (Windows 8)
  • Microsoft Office Word
  • Microsoft Office Excel
  • Microsoft Office PowerPoint
  • Internet and e-mailing

"…what I have learnt here is precious; I have been given an opportunity to discover my creative side through digital means…"
Musawenkosi Tshabalala 23 (Design student)

The project has extended its scope with an even more creative focus and Creative Design classes were introduced in May 2013. The Creative Design classes enable the learner’s to be creative and create their own means of living in future.

The Desing class teaches recognised softwares and content management system such as:

  • Adobe Photoshop Cs6
  • XAMPP (local hosting)
  • Artisteer

  • Joomla (content management system)
  • Community Cyber Cafe

The Computer Centre offers Basic computer skills from beginners to advanced level to the Hillbrow Community for free. New students have to fill the forms at Outreach office. This acceptance criteria is in place, because demand for the course is big and space is limited. At the end of their tuition period, students write exams and are awarded certificates.
